Ten local students recently received scholarships from the Park West Lions Club at a dinner meeting to recognize each recipient. Scholarship recipients were from left to right: (front row) Zachary Gruninger, Battlefield High School; Jayden Turner, Patriot High School; Elena Shropshire, Battlefield High School; Evan Davisson, Patriot High School; (back row) Audrey Basler, Patriot High School; Anandita Hussain, Battlefield High School; Rebecca Violett, Patriot High School; Alexis Francis, Patriot High School. Also recipients unable to attend were: Cameron Kacala, Patriot High School, and Diya Patel, Patriot High School.
Park West Lions Club President Doug Cross and Scholarship Chairperson Jim Williams presented each student with a check for $1000 made payable to the university or college he or she will be attending in the fall.
Jim Williams, Scholarship Chairperson, stated that the selection process was very competitive as there were many applicants. The Grade Point Averages and transcripts were only part of the process in the selection of the final recipients. Because the Park-West Lion’s Club is a service organization and part of the largest volunteer non-profit organization in the world, the members of the Scholarship Committee were also looking for the amount and type of service and volunteer time that the applicants gave back to the community. Each of the recipients had an extensive amount of time in various projects.
Scholarship recipients will be attending the following institutions of higher learning:
- Alexis Francis – Bridgewater College
- Anandita Hussain – University of Virginia-Wise
- Audrey Basler – Auburn University
- Cameron Kacala – George Mason University
- Diya Patel – University of Virginia
- Elena Shropshire – Stanford University
- Evan Davisson – University of Virginia
- Jayden Turner – Christopher Newport University
- Rebecca Violett – Rochester Institute of Technology
- Zachary Gruninger – University of Georgia
